NYIHA MEDIA is saddened by the passing of Dominican-Haitian activist Sonia Pierre, following a heart failure in Villa Altagracia, Dominican Republic on December 4, 2011. Sonia, your contributions to human rights in DR will not be forgotten. In Sonia's honor, we are dedicating 2 days of film screening at Fordham University.

The Caribbean Student Association of the New York Institute of Technology sponsored a screening of Multicultural Education and a conversation with Dr. Steeve Coupeau on 18 November 2010. The event highlighted the need for student involvement, learning and service opportunities abroad.

One member of our Board of Directors, Dr. Steeve Coupeau participated from 21 to 25 June 2010 in Cardisis 3, an international meeting to serve human networks using the means offered by Information and Communication Technologies.

The screening was followed by a timely and dynamic dialogue with Javier Guzman, in support of peace building, generating awareness, and impacting American foreign policy towards Colombia.

On Friday July 30, 2010, NYIHA MEDIA presented La Milagrosa (The Miraculous) at Maysles Cinema. Directed by Rafael Lara. Colombia - Mexico. 2008. 35mm. Fiction. 105 minutes.

The film reflects valuable production achievements including Hollywood type action-packed sequences, explosions and special effects. This is an intense film with characters on the edge, turning to religion as they face life or death situations. The screening will be  followed by post-film discussion of humanitarian issues in Colombia.

The segments of news reporting seem fairly objective in covering the story as many different perspectives from inside the Dominican Republic are shown… "Human Rights in Quisqueya" is a film that could scare you into doing something... or nothing. Bruno Gaston. In April 2010, NYIHA MEDIA released Multicultural Education.

This film explores practice of cultural diversity in daily life of multicultural cities in the South, receiving diverse waves of international migrants. Publisher: NYIHA MEDIA. NYIHA MEDIA | SJRM|EntreCultural. Narrative and interviews in Spanish with English subtitles. Length: 12 minutes.

On Thursday April 1, 2010 NYIHA MEDIA organized a screening of Human Rights in Haiti at Maysles Cinema. The screening was  followed by post-film discussion of humanitarian efforts in Haiti.

An Earthquake Relief Benefit at the Latino Commission on AIDS featured a public screening of Human Rights in Haiti by Isabelle Abric and Simone Guidi di Bagno (1999) on January 21, 2010. The screening was  followed by post-film discussion of humanitarian efforts in Haiti.

On October 10, 2009, Broward County Library presents the South Florida Premiere of “Human Rights In Quisqueya,” and "A Taste of Haiti" Celebration. Dr. Steeve Coupeau, President of the NYIHA MEDIA, conducted a discussion following the film. 

NYIHA MEDIA endorsed the Racial Profiling: Face the Truth Campaign. In October 2009, we joined 220 local and national organizations in signing on to letter to Senator Schumer that outlines a list of principles necessary to protect Constitutional and human rights when enforcing immigration laws in the nation’s interior and at the border. 

NYIHA MEDIA organized a screening of 2 human rights films, The Sugar Babies: The Plight of the Children of Agricultural Workers in the Sugar Industry of the Dominican Republic" [USA 2007] by award-winning filmmaker Amy Serrano and Human Rights in Quisqueya by NYIHA MEDIA on Friday July 10, 2009 at Maysles Cinema in Harlem, New York.

NYIHA MEDIA condemns in the strongest terms possible the usurpation of power in Honduras by the de facto regime of Roberto Micheletti after the forcible removal of democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya on June 28, 2009. Crimes, like this, inflicted upon unarmed civilians should not go unpublished.

GALDE sponsored a screening of The Challenge of Coexistence / El Desafio de la Convivencia on March 12, 2009 at Doña Carmen Bakery  4476 Broadway @ 192 street in Washington Heights, New York. Dr. Steeve Coupeau responded to questions from viewers after the screening.


As part of the celebration of the month of the mother country, Quisqueya, Luis Alvarez-Lopez, the Dominican Commissioner of Culture in the United States and Cultural Wednesday sponsored the panel "The Dominican-Haitian Problematic" on Saturday February 21, 2009. Antonio Méndez presented: "Current Dominican-Haitian Affairs and Possible Solution". Professor Apolinar Matos spoke on the geopolitical context of Dominican-Haitian Relations. Dr. Steeve Coupeau spoke on Ethnicity and Exclusion in the Americas; and Diogenes Abréu read his text: "Without haitianidad there is no dominicanidad". Professor John C. Sheppard, Director of the New York Office of Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo moderated the panel.


The Challenge of Co-Existence was officially selected for screening at Maysles Cinema, a prominent movie venue in Harlem, New York. The documentary was screened to a full theater on 12 January 2009.

On friday October 10, 2008, the Global Information Network organized a special screening of the Paul Newman-narrated film The Price of Sugar, with guest appearance of Marie Yolene Gilles of the Haiti-based Reseau National de Defense des Droits Humains and Dr. Steeve Coupeau, author of the History of Haiti.


NYIHA MEDIA conducted outreach for relief for the hundreds of thousands of people in Haiti affected by hurricanes Gustav, Hanna, and Ike. We also urged our readers and list members to support the bill HR6520, introduced in the 110th Congress and 2D Session, which aims to increase global stability and security for the United States and the International Community by reducing the number of individuals who are de jure or de facto stateless and at risk of being trafficked.


WRFG-FM radio host Jenero conducted an Interview with Dr. Steeve Coupeau on Haiti's contributions to liberation in Latin America in the 19th Century on Monday 25 June 2008. The interview was edited by Bruno Gaston.

Dr. Steeve Coupeau delivered the keynote address at the First Annual Banquet of the Connecticut Haitian Voice, which took place at Continental Manor in Norwalk, Connecticut. A distinguished list of artists and writers contributed to live Entertainment inlcuding Connecticut's Ambassador of the National Anthem, Mezzo-soprano Wendy Gerbier; Classical Guitarist Marc Mathelier; Saxophonist Jacques “Doudou” Chancy and Award Winning Poet Jeanie Bogart.

 

The NYU Multi-Racial Law Students Association sponsored a screening of "Human Rights of Quisqueya" and lively discussion as part of the "Week of Action at New York University" on May 2, 2008 .


As part of the Faculty / Graduate Student of Color Dinner Series, Dr. Steeve Coupeau delivered the lecture entitled "Ethnicity and Exclusion in the Americas" on March 6, 2008. The event, which took placed at the Kimmel Center, was organized by the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs and co-sponsored the Office of Student Affairs at NYU.


On December 19, 2007, NYIHA MEDIA collaborated with the Museum of the Moving Image to realize a memorable evening with conversations with legendary independent filmmaker John Sayles about his new film, Honeydripper and Danny Glover about his illustrious career. The evening ended with a special performance by blues musician Gary Clark Jr. at The Times Center in Manhattan, New York.


Dr. Steeve Coupeau delivered the Opening Remarks at the Third Annual Celebration of Community Leadership of the Central American Black Organization known in Spanish as Organizacion Negra de Centroamerica. This well-attended event took place on December 7, 2007 at the St. Augustine’s Church in Bronx, New York.

MEDIA MEDIA and Libreria Caliope organized a successful screening of the documentary Human Rights in Quisqueya on 31 May 2007 at Libreria Caliope in Washington Heights, New York City.

The Center for African Education, the Association of Latin American Scholars, and the Office of International Services presented Human Rights in Quisqueya, a film screening and discussion at 306 Rusell Hall (Library) Teachers College, Columbia University  on April 6, 2007 with filmmaker Dr. Steeve Coupeau, John Jay College of Criminal Justice; Caroline Bettinger-López, Columbia Law School, Human Rights Institute & Human Rights Clinic; Dr. Monisha Bajaj, Assistant Professor, Teachers College; and Kiran Jayaram, a Ph.D. Student, Teachers College.

On December 29, 2006, NYIHA MEDIA in collaboration with C.T.M. conducted a toy drive in Washington Heights. In one night, we collected over 210 toys for the children of the bateyes of Dominican Republic. The first suitcase containing 110 toys was delivered to Movimiento de Mujeres Dominico-Haitianas (MUDHA) on 19 March 2007. We express gratitude to all who contributed to our toy drive.

NYIHA MEDIA is pleased to have 2 of its writers selected for the first Technology & New Media Institute of the National Black Programming Consortium with support from Corporation for Public Broadcasting and WGBH, Theresa Thanjan and Dr. Steeve Coupeau. As a participant in the first Technology & New Media Institute, Dr. Steeve Coupeau co-produced the Afro-Galactic Postcards. The Postcards, which are messages that have been traveling for light years through the cosmos trying to reach their intended beloved. To view postcards
Four Boston-based Human Rights groups organized a screening of a Documentary by Dr. Steeve Coupeau on November 8, 2006 including Encuentro Diaspora Afro, Matahari: Eye of the Day, Rosa Parks Human Rights Day Committee, and Red de Mujeres Afro. On August 27, 2006, NYIHA MEDIA in collaboration with C.T.M. Cine Teatro Musica and Teatro Estudio Internacional, Primer Teatro Dominicano in New York Presented A Night of Cinema, T heater and Music at the Times Square Arts Center located at 300 West 43rd Street. We delivered film screenings, theater performance by Dominican performer Lina Beltre and Dominican singer Arelis Figueroa. Dr. Coupeau curated an exhibit of photos by documentary photographer Ingrid Guyon and moderated the Q & A after the film screenings.

NYIHA has joined two major groups focusing on Haitian-Dominican Relations. Dr. Steeve Coupeau now serves on the Coordinating Committee of the Dominican Coalition in Solidarity with the Haitian Community in the Dominican Republic. Dr. Coupeau is also on the Coordinating Committee of the Haitian and Dominican Action Group.

Dr. Steeve Coupeau delivered the lecture "The Crisis in Hispanola: Which Way Forward" at Hispaniola: Voices of its People Echoing Freedom!!": 1st Annual Haitian-Dominican Open Forum at Columbia University, April 29th, 2006.
Dr. Steeve Coupeau delivered the keynote address at the launch of Caribbean Week 2006 by the Caribbean Students Association of the City College of New York. The presentation entitled "Assessing Caribbean Contributions to American Culture and Society" focused on the period between 1900 and 2006.

NYIHA WELCOMES NEW WRITERS

NYIHA MEDIA welcomes to its ranks several new contributors . Arts and Culture writer, Ruth Moyse, received a Bachelor of Arts’ degree in journalism from the State University of New York at Purchase. While learning journalism at Purchase College, Ms. Moyse published regularly in two student newspapers. After her May 2005 graduation, she wrote for both the Haitian Times and Caribbean Life in New York City.  NYIHA also published an article by Dr. Kumar Mahabir on Caribbean Indian Actors in Cinema. Dominican-American writer, Mark A. Torres, also wrote a column entitled Haitian-Dominican Corner.

REVIEW OF PRODUCTS

In 2005, NYIHA formally entered the music distribution market by representing Costa Rican singer Sasha Campbell. Sasha's new CD, Soulmate, is an intoxicating fusion of Hip Hop, Jazz and R&B.The CD is available through our website.

Forthcoming publication of Dr. Steeve Coupeau's “Legacy of the Haitian Slave Revolt” in The Encyclopedia of Slave Resistance and   Rebellion, Junius P. Rodriguez, Ed. Westport, CT: Greenwood Publishing Group.

On 15 November 2005, Dr. Steeve Coupeau delivered a paper entitled "Promoting the Culture of Peace in Haiti" following the screening of "Human Rights in Haiti" by producer Isabelle Abric. This event was part of the Columbia Human Rights Film Series, which is a project of the Center for the Study of Human Rights, the Undergraduate Human Rights Program and the Human Rights Institute of Columbia University.
NYIHA MEDIA has joined Pacific News Service/New America Media.
As a publisher, Dr. Steeve Coupeau holds membership in the OneWorld Network.

NYIHA Advocacy News sponsored a commemorative advertisement in the commemorative booklet published in June 2005   by the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture on the occasion of the retirement of NYIHA's legal adviser, Charles Horwitz.

Racism and racial discrimination are deep-rooted, though not institutionalized, in Guatemala.
